Chapter 12

They had been in the planning room for hours as Xavior popped in with one plant after another. Bram would freeze everything except the people there, and then say, “Benji, it’s safe to shift.” However, nothing happened so they would move on to the next.

Each time Xavior appeared, he would give Patch a smile or wiggle his eyes. Patch knew it was just to piss off Zion, and with each growl Patch heard Zion make, he knew X’s plan was working. Zion was getting pissed, but so was Patch.

With each growl, Zion would move closer to Patch. If this didn’t stop soon, Patch feared his mate would either sit on him or actually pee on him to mark his territory.

Patch was about ready to use his computer to whack both men over the head. Instead, he stood and started to leave the room.

Zion loudly asked, “Patch, where are you going?”

Not even turning, Patch yelled back, “I think we could all use something to eat.”

Patch made his way to the kitchen and took the leftovers from last night’s roast and started slicing it for sandwiches.

As he opened the fridge and bent to grab some mayonnaise and mustard along with some other things, Patch heard someone entering the room.

A soft hand caressed Patch’s back and shoulder, and Zion’s soft voice said, “I’m sorry. Xavior just rubs me the wrong way.”

Patch stepped back and away from his mate, and began to put the sandwiches together. “He was trying to provoke you.”

Zion started helping make the meal. “I know you have nothing going on with Xavior, Patch. I just don’t like the way he looks at you.”

“X, has no interest in me, Zion,” Patch said as he began cutting and placing the sandwiches on a plate.

The door opened, and Carl walked in, smiling. “Hey, guys, I came to help.”

Patch handed the platter to his friend, saying, “I’ll put together a veggie tray.”

After turning and pulling out some carrots, radishes, celery, and cucumbers, Patch started cleaning the vegetables as Zion cut them. “Patch, he’s always smiling at you and damn it the man was in the room with you when you were naked.”

Sighing, Patch took out some peanut butter and started filling the cut celery with it. “He has zero interest in me, Zion, and for the hundredth time, I was not naked in front of the man nor have I ever been.”

Zion set his knife down and started saying, “Patch, Xav—”

Patch was really starting to lose patience with Zion and hissed. “—isn’t the only reason I’m not a happy man right now.”

He turned and went into the walk-in pantry for some chips. Zion followed, asking, “If my behavior isn’t what has you so upset with me, then what is?”

Patch turned, chips in hand, saying, “I said it wasn’t the only reason, but what really has me ticked is you not talking with me first before deciding I have a fucking bodyguard.”

Zion pursed his lips, saying, “Patch, the message is clear that Stalin is planning on coming for you.
